What I like: This is my stable and I am not afraid to say so. I use to like how my husband and I would bend over backwards to help people. Some people mistake our kindness for weakness or lack of business sence. |
What needs improvement: Normally I don’t comment on these forums but this time I think some facts needs to be added to “Christy’s” comments. Good try using the street name for your name but you should not have written so proper. It gives you away.
First this person puts down that they like the trails and cost. That’s because this person has a deal of paying 100.00 less per month cause they asked for a deduction. The only business flaw is that the owners try to help whenever possible. But that is going to stop now. Any boarder that can’t pay on time is getting a 30-day notice so if you come to them and say you will have to sell your horse. Good advertising. You turned a caring couple into a no interaction business owner. And boarders that are paying nothing because you are not quite up and running your life yet, start looking free ride is over. Services not needed anymore.
The manure does get hauled out but not weekly. Arena lights and barn lights do work. Sometimes after a rain storm they will stop for a day or two.
We fix the wash rack and hoses all the time because the borders do not instruct their horses to behave and they break it monthly. Some corrals are old but still usable. Trash cans have all been replaced with larger ones with lids so no more overflowing as it was pointed out. The bath room was to be remodeled by a boarders brother and friend but wanted to be paid before work was started, said no way. So they tore down the walls, unhooked the sink and left the floor tiles outside to get rained on. Now some facilities have the porta potties, now that is nasty. So ranch could just close this one down and get porta potties. Most of the clutter sitting around is put there by the boarders that don’t clean up after themselves. The water buckets are checked twice a day and are all very clean. I ask anyone to come and look, anytime. Animal Services has been called out by a boarder and we cleared with flying colors. And since we did not know that they were called out it was a surprise to ranch. So no hurry hurries to get things straight or hidden. The horses are always fed what is contracted for. Some people think they should get 4 flakes a day for 250.00 per month. Horses are cleaned daily and Animal Services commented that stalls were clean and that pee spots are not done at any facilities good. This ranch has always taken pictures of all horses on the ranch twice a month just so we can see that no changes have occurred with weights of horses. They all got AAA reports from Animal Services but for the 3 rescues and they will come back in time for god’s sake. Hay is brought in sometimes in small loads because the boarders keep insisting on paying late so not able to place a large order at one time. And try to get them to pay the late fee. Personal horses get out all the time but at odd times as to not take up arena time from boarders. But maybe new rule should be that the first four hours of each day will be for ranch horses. Farrier care is every 8 to 10 weeks same farrier and time line as these borders. Maybe they are overdue also. Again, anyone can come by and look for themselves. Lack of proper feeding for older horses, that’s a laugh. Let go over the horses that have been put down in the last four months and let’s see where the fault should lay. One, boarder asked to put shavings in 22 year old blind horse. Was told please don’t cause he eats them and colic’s. Next day horse colic’s and we notice what is left of shavings in the stall. Impacted and vet drug out manure covered with shaving. Second, boarders were told not to give carrots unless they are graded to 33 year old horse because he has no molars. Gave them carrots anyway and horse choked but vet could not bring him out of colic from not drinking cause of sour throat, IV fluids did not help, had to put him down. Owner had this horse for 32 years. Rescue was allergic to alfalfa, told boarder not to feed Equine Senior because it caused bad reaction. Horse fed Senior anyway; horse also had a heart murmur. Horse went into seizer and had to be put down. 43 year old horse laid down one morning and did not want to get up anymore. Ranch said good bye and put him down. This border wants Middle Ranch look with only paying 250.00 to 400.00 per month. Sorry this is so long but tired of always reading one side and it be slanting always. Hope this lets people know that there are always two sides to every story and to ask for that side also. |

What I like: Access to trails, cost |
What needs improvement: Summerhawk needs much improvement. The owners, while may have good intentions, they are not good business people. They are not able to pay for manure removal (the pile is so large at times, the city issues fines), basic fixes around the property (several arena and barn lights have been out for a long time, bathroom has never worked properly and is filthy, wash racks have broken faucets and hoses, some of the stalls are not safe, trash bins overflowing, clutter everywhere), lack of sufficient help (stalls are not always cleaned out daily, water buckets are OFTEN dirty or empty, sometimes horses not feed correct amount of hay or skipped altogether, workers don't show up for work to feed on time), bulk hay (usually hay is purchased daily), care of their personal horses (many horses in a short period of time have died while under the owner's care, insufficient farrier care, lack of proper feeding for older horses, little to no turn out - animal control has been called out multiple times). It's a shame that they are not able to manage the place better and attract and keep boarders, but until they take responsibility and manage their budget properly so they can hire the right workers to care for the horses and the facilities, I am afraid I cannot in good faith recommend Summerhawk to any horse owner. |

What I like: Everything. The new owners have cleaned house so to speak and the drama is gone. All the boarders are great, no conflects and this barn inforces all the rules therefore no problems. I also love that you may come to see your horse at any time day or night and each horse is checked by owners at 11:00 to Midnight each and every night before turning in. All employees and owners live on the property. Trail access to die for. |
What needs improvement: Corrals are a little old looking but are safe and new owners are replacing them and upgrading barns each month. |

What I like: There are NO barn divas! VERY friendly environment, everybody is always helpful, considerate, and easy to get along with. Nils is the NICEST barn owner/mgr,. I have ever met! They are honest, and always lend an ear. They are CONSTANTLY making improvements for both the horses, and their owners. They also provide the BEST and LEAST expensive boarding price anywhere within 25 miles of the LA Equestrian Center. Trails are easy to get to, 3 major freeways are within minutes, and if you EVER need help, there is always someone willing! |
What needs improvement: Mostly just repairs of older stalls, but major renovating is underway! A little bit better "car" access during the winter months. |
