What I like: I have boarded over the years at a variety of stables in the Twin Cities and I am very impressed with the quality of care and tranquil setting of Painted Sky. I always look forward to riding my horse - they have a wonderful indoor arena with great footing and access to a scenic trail system. The trainers are skilled and the boarders and staff are so friendly and welcoming. The dog Tank always greets me when I arrive for a scratch behind the ears. The horses are content in their herds and are well fed. Many of the horse owners I have met there are dedicated to the wellbeing of their horses and have found a long term home at Painted Sky. I feel very fortunate to have found a wonderful place to ride and enjoy time with my horse and other horse enthusiasts. No barn is perfect - I know a high end show barn that had a horse die accidentally. It's sad but it can happen anywhere. |
What needs improvement: I agree - a wash stall would be nice. |

What I like: The horses are extremely well taken care of at Painted Sky. They are physically checked in the pastures every day---no matter what the weather (pouring rain, blizzard...), the manager/staff is out there making sure everyone is okay. The hay is good quality and available to the horses---there isn't a thin horse out there! The management really cares about the boarders and their horses. The little "extras" that other facilities charge dearly for are part of the normal care (no extra charge) at this place (stuff like wound care, meds, leg wraps, holding horses for the farrier or vet, etc). My horse had a nasty eye infection a while back and I got help several times a day getting the medication administered. No charge, no complaint, and they even met me out early in the rnorning to help. How many places would do that for you? There was mention on other reviews about barn drama and the loss of a former trainer. My experience is that drama is always present to some degree, but it's handled well by the owner/management. As for the trainer that was mentioned, she was asked to leave due to the problems she was causing. In my opinion the drama is pretty much non-existent now that she (and her companions) have moved on. I wish her well but she obviously has personal issues that impacted her behavior at the barn. Also, comments about poisonous weeds? Wow...not the case. The pastures are very nice--lots of open rolling hills, rotated often. Yes, several years ago there was a horse that got her leg caught in a feeder. It was a horrible tragedy. However it was found that the feeder had a faulty/defective panel. The barn owner spent a ton of money going over all the feeders to make sure it could never happen again. She also paid for all vet bills and the value of the horse to the owner, even though it wasn't her fault. In addition, the barn owner has taken in many rescue-situation horses and spent a considerable amount on rehabbing them and giving them a honest chance at a happy life. There are family fun shows in the spring and fall (where I have witnessed both the barn owner and the manager arrange to make available their own horses to people/kids who down have their own horse but would love to try competing----they even hand-walk little kids through the patterns so they can be part of the show), holiday parties, bon fires, etc. All in all, you couldn't ask for a place that is more caring to it's boarders or their horses. |
What needs improvement: I wish there were more tack boxs and saddle racks! It would be great to have a heated wash area. |

What I like: I have owned & ridden horses since I was a child. This is the best barn in the Grant- Lake Elmo-Stillwater Area that I know of (if you are looking for a down to earth atmosphere where people own & ride horses for relaxation & pleasure). There is easy access to the Gate Way Trail, rolling pastures, both an indoor & outdoor arena, several paddocks, and heated stalls. |
What needs improvement: I love this place. |

What I like: I love it here, the people here are VERY nice and welcoming. the large herd is in one of the most beautiful pastures I've ever seen! the stalls are clean and the horses are very well cared for. each ones name is known by heart and usually can be named off the top of the head. the women and men working there know everything. i work there when i get the chance and i love being there. they have a older dog named tank and he's the nicest guy ever. they also have a few cats that are very loving. i very much enjoy this place and i cant wait to go back. Painted sky is a very relaxed facility. i enjoy every second im there. |
What needs improvement: its not the cleanest place ever but its not perfect. and what place is? i know about the barn drama and it doesnt bother me at all. i mean what place so you go that doesnt have drama? and its not even that bad. but other than that i cant think of anything else. |

What I like: It has an indoor arena and is close to the Gateway. |
What needs improvement: I would have rated the stable as a 0 but 1 was the lowest option. The hay quality is very bad with the bales being filled with dust and mold. The hay feeders themselves are dangerous since they aren't set up properly and horses can get stuck under them. One horse actually died because she got stuck and broke her leg in her efforts to free herself. The pastures are too small for the amount of horses in them which causes the horses to fight frequently. There are poisonous weeds in most of the pastures. The amount of horses that get injured is much higher then any other barn I've boarded at. The fencing is in need of repair. There is a lot of drama between people which makes going to visit your horse less then enjoyable. All in all the facility itself is nice but the way it is managed and maintained leaves a lot to be desired. I felt my horse was in danger while boarded here. |

What I like: Laid back. Friendly people. Trainer (Jen) is excellent! The horses are treated well and are checked twice daily. The facility is well laid out. I don't think it's anything "fancy", but it is complete and works well. I feel my horse is safe and well cared for when I'm not there. |
What needs improvement: Nothing. It is perfect for me. |

What I like: I liked the trainer/instructor that was there, but she is no longer there! Which in actually is a great thing, because that place was bringing her down. |
What needs improvement: Everything needs improving. I had a 2 year old there for 30 days. I had to bring my own food (because the stuff they had was terrible, and I wouldn't let my horse eat it) We had to clean the stall ourselves. There is a guy that lives upstairs that is a grouchy man, and has a dog that attacks..... LIABILITY! Lots of horses get hurt out there because it is unsafe. I am just glad my horse was in a stall/arena being handled by my trainer, otherwise I would have been a mess. |
